Part 4 - THE HOLY SPIRIT

I. INTRO We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person, who convicts the world of sin, of Righteousness, and of judgement, regenerates, indwells, seals, enlightens, and empowers the saved to live a Godly life. (John 14:16,17) (John 16:8-13) (John 3:3-6) (1 Cor 3:16) (Gal 5:16) (1 Cor 12:13) (Eph 4:30) .

II.EXPOSITION

1. Person of the Spirit
a. 3rd member of the Godhead- (1 Jn 5:7) (Mt 3:16,17) dove has a gentle, tender & peaceful nature
b. Active in Creation (Gen 1:1-3,26)
c. The Spirit is not an “it” but is He. Holy & Spirit describe Him
2. Convicts (Jn 16:7-13) (presents evidence causing one to see truth)
a. Of sin- The sin of unbelief, (Rom 3:23) “All have sinned”
b. Of Righteousness-
1- (Rom 10:3,4)
2- (Phil. 3:8,9) “the righteousness which is of God”
c. Of Judgement
1- satans power broken, he is judged and defeated
2- unbelievers (Jn 3:18)
3. Regenerates
a. Invites to Christ (Rev 22:17) “The Spirit and the bride say Come”
b. (Jn 3:3-6) born of the Spirit- must be drawn by the Spirit and believe the Word, to be saved
c. (Titus 3:5) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost”
4. Baptizes
a. (Acts 1:5) “Ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost”
b. (1 Cor 12:13) “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body”
5. Indwells
a. (Jn 14:16,17)
b. (Acts 2:38) “Repent….and ye shall receive the gift of the Hol;y Ghost”
c. (1 Cor 3:16) “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit dwelleth”
6. Seals
a. Engrafted (Rom 11:17) “being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them” b. Sealed-showing ownership, finished transaction. (Eph 4:30)
c. Earnest (pledge paid in advance with the promise of fulfillment) (Eph 1:13,14) (2 Cor 1:21, 22)
7. Enlightens (To cause to see and know)
a. (Eph 1:18) “the eyes of your understanding being enlightened”
b. (2 Cor 4:6) “light to shine”
c. teaches (Jn 14:26) “He shall teach you all things” (1 Cor 2:13,14)
8. Empowers
a. (Acts 1:8) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you”
b. Leads and guides (2 Pet 1:21) (Jn 16:13) (Gal 5:16-18)
c. Power of resurrection
1- Jesus (1 Pet 3:18) “That he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit”
2- believers (Rom 8:11) (1 Cor 6:14) “the Lord will also raise up us by his own power”
9. Intercedes
a. (Rom 8:26) “the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which can’t be…”
10. Fruit Shown
a. (Jn 15:5) “I am the vine, ye are the branches”
b. (Gal 5:22,23) “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
